A rare example of North Island temperate lowland forest. Now protected by a pest fence, this forest remnant was bequeathed to Forest and Bird in 1962 along with the Historic Bushy Park Homestead.

Location

Located in Manawatū-Whanganui, 24 km north of Whanganui.

Area

89 ha of pest-fenced lowland rainforest.

Organisations involved

Bushy Park Tarapuruhi Trust cares for the sanctuary in partnership with Forest & Bird, working closely with Ngā Rauru, within whose rohe it lies.

Management history

A pest-proof fence (Xcluder™ “kiwi”) was constructed around the forest in 2004/05 and mammal pests eradicated.

Toutouwai / North Island robins were reintroduced in 2005, tīeke / North Island saddlebacks in 2006, and hihi/stitchbirds in 2013.

Access

Several walking tracks through the reserve are open to the public during daylight hours. The Historic Homestead is open to the public Wednesday–Sunday, 10:00am –4:00pm, or by appointment.
